Why We Need Curves

Curves are the word. In the modelling industry curve models are still a major talking point; From our curve model Fluvia killin' it on the latest cover of Plus Model Mag to Audrey becoming the face of Slink jeans and no to mention new face Poppy being the e-commerce queen over at the Boohoo Studio. However today we are talking to our up-and-coming curve model Chanelle, on societies view points on plus size models in the fashion industry, being a finalist in the Simply Be contest and the power of self love, check it all out here alongside her campaign with One One Three.

Society tells us that we need to look and act in a certain way, but I believe everybody is beautiful in their own way. The way you look, act, think and feel can be seen as beauty.

 Explain your journey into modelling?
The journey to get to where I am today wasn’t easy. I’m not going to lie to you or sugar coat it and tell you that one day you will wake up feeling fabulous and the rest is history, because that is not the case! It took me a while to accept myself for who I am, flaws and all and I never ever thought that I would be a model. I always perceived models to be the definition of ‘perfect’. Then I came to realize that nobody is perfect and its our imperfections which make us the strong minded people that we are today.   When I first started modelling It showed on camera of how much confidence I lacked and that made me turn around and think to myself ‘is that how the world sees me?’ If I wanted to be successful my mind-set had to change to positive thoughts and with that positive things came along.

What has been your biggest achievement in modelling?
I was hand picked alongside 3 other girls, out of 3000 to model for SIMPLY BE! One of the biggest plus size brands in the UK. Even though that’s a big achievement in my life I feel like for even one stranger to notice me and tell me that I am beautiful, it was a massive confidence booster. That confidence has changed my life. Once my campaign with simply be had finished, I did not want to stop modelling. So I seeked out to find an agency to help me progress my career in modelling. Hughes models was the most inspiring agency I had come across and was all for supporting me on my journey to body positivity!

Being a plus size model in spotlight, is the advice always positive?
Even though I was on a high from all the inspiring comments and love I would get from complete strangers, there is always negativity in this world. Being in the public eye isn’t always fun, you have to deal with a lot of negative comments from people who like to voice their opinion without thinking about the hate they are spreading and the impact they have on your self esteem. In edition to this, rejection can be a big factor to negative energy and us models receive this on a regular basis. When we get all excited for an upcoming job that we have casted for and sometimes we don’t even get an answer, you just have to assume you didn’t get it if you didn’t hear anything. Can be quite hard to stay positive after constant exclusion.

How do you maintain a healthy mindset?
It is always good to find a way to keep your mind clean from negativity, for me that’s regular visits to the gym. Exercise helps you have a healthy mind, body and soul. Even if it’s a walk around the park, yoga or an intense session, I recommend it!

What advice do you have for aspiring models?
Its always best to set goals. Celebrate every accomplishment however big or small, taking baby steps or giant steps, this means you are always pushing yourself to do more than you think you could. As long as you take that step, you are one step closer to your dreams.
